What do you cut when there’s nothing left to cut? The food shop? The heating? The cost of living doesn’t squeeze everyone equally. For the lowest-income households, food, housing and energy take 41 percent of spending. For the highest-income households? 20 percent. A smaller budget, with a bigger share tied up in the basics. And look at the recent shock. From 2021 to 2025, typical full-time pay rose about 26 percent. Food prices rose 36 percent. Gas prices, 74 percent. Those are national comparisons. Your own bills depend on where and how you live. In a survey of lower-income households, 58 percent said they heated their homes less than they needed. 51 percent cut food spending because of rising costs. These are separate answers. But behind them are difficult choices. UK Facts looks beyond the averages. See who is struggling, why it’s happening, and what could change. Come visit www.uk-statpack.co.uk to find out more.
